Target Research [ Interviews ]
Images Courtesy of Facebook: American Sailing AssociationThe following are questions asked to sailors and sailing enthusiast:
How much time do you spend on the water?
Would a sailing app be of interest to you? Why?
What features in app would be of service?
Key Findings
Mobile Lifestyle - The majority of sailors and sailing enthusiast do not own their own boat. This means they borrow, crew or charter boats to gain access to the water. In this scenario, they often do not know what equipment the boat will be outfitted with. Most vessels are equipped with navigation and radio equipment, but advanced weather forecasting instruments are often not found. Today, the modern sailor always has a backup plan, and the mobile device is that plan. Since most sailing is coastal or inland cruising, mobile devices are within range of cell towers and this gives the sailor access to up to the minute data.Weather - Having access to all types of weather data while on the water has defined the modern sailing experience. This is the primary feature sailors have requested in a mobile application.
Knots, Flags & Lights - Sailors are always introducing the wind, water and sailing to new people. A captains duty is hard, so when bringing new people on board, sometimes it would benefit the captain and the boat if the newby's could get quicks tips on their own time. An app feature requested to fill this purpose is knot education. While the other two requested, light and flag features are taught in a sailing education, a quick reference is still needed by the saltiest of sailors.
